Year One students were invited behind the scenes at Kesslers International — an award-winning design and manufacturing company — to see how designs transition from concept to reality. Kesslers cover design and manufacture under one roof, which offered our students a unique insight, not only on how their designs are made, but also the journey they take from a client’s needs to a designer’s vision, before the final 3D reality produced on the factory floor. Clive Scott, Creative Director and Ravensbourne alumni, was able to walk the students through the many processes of manufacture and material manipulation, showing in detail what could be achieved with a variety of different materials.
Students were able to cement their understanding of both moulding and fabrication manufacture techniques. They also talked with the design team to see how components came to life, from the initial brief through concept scamps and sketches to prototypes and the engineers’ final creations.
